Windows Media Center Movie Library with xbox 360

If you are like me, you have been banging your head against the wall trying to get your xbox 360 working correctly with your Windows Media Center’s Movie Library. I went on and on figuring it was a codec problem. The issue you are seeing should be that when logged directly into the media center it sees your movies, but the xbox 360 shows an error: “There are no items in the library yet …”

The solution is stupid… you just need to add the folder FROM the xbox 360. You would think it would pull the settings directly from the media center PC just like it does for music and pictures library, but it does not. Anyways, just go to settings, Media Libraries and add a movie library to the share (or folder) where you have your videos.

Now, if only these videos had cover art etc. Well, you could add each video and find cover art for the video and spend the rest of your life doing that for each video… or you could use an easy windows service that will easily find the name of your video and download cover art and even extra meta data. It doesn’t work for every movie but in my collection it covered about 80%.

The tool you need to download is called Yammm (Yet Another Media Meta Manager). Before you install though you should know that each video needs to be in its own folder. You can easily complete this by running this dos command inside your videos folder:

FOR %i IN (*.*) DO (IF NOT EXIST “%~ni” MD “%~ni”) & (MOVE “%i” “%~ni”)

When this command completes point Yammm to the root of your movie folder, click save and walk away. It will create artwork for any new movies you put in this folder as well!

xbox 360 is not as good as the new Nintendo Wii. Wii beats Xbox 360 by features alone*”~

Both consoles are great but for now, xbox is hot because of kinect. Much better if Sony can do the same…or set the bar higher.

Hey that is one nifty trick! I liked the little script you provided to automatically put the videos into separate folders. Will come in handy to finally organize my video collection. Thanks for the share 🙂

This fix doesn’t seem to work for me. My Xbox 360 doesn’t show the movies that I have in the Movies library in WMC7. So I did like you said and went to Settings->Media Libraries->Movies, but it had the folder I wanted already included (on a different PC than WMC). So I removed it. Then I added it again, all from the 360. No go. Won’t show anything!! Argghghggh.

    Tom –

Try removing all of the links from your WMC computer, then add just using the 360. Then, once you have that working, add them again from the WMC computer if you are using that somewhere else.

Good information. On the approx. 80% that is collected, what percentage of the results are 100% accurate? In my opinion, the standard 360 Video Library appears it wants to only display some thumbnails for files, mainly MP4, that it can’t play and MOV files, not the more popular AVI files.

Is your library by any chance on a network share or a mapped network drive the extenders will not see network based files by design.

I have the same exact problem. Library’s show fine on the Media Center, but on my Xbox I get the “There are no items in the library yet …”

When I remove the library’s on the Media Center, and try to add it from the xbox 360, I get a

“CANNOT ACCESS FOLDER You don’t currently have permissions to access this folder. To add it to your media library, go to your PC, open Windows Explorer, and verify that you can access the folder”
    See screen shot:

I went back to the Media Center, and was able to add the libraries back. They show up in Media Center, but the xbox 360 still says “There are no items in the library yet …”
